As a clinical psychologist, published author, and mother to two cheeky young children, I get it. I’ve spent YEARS researching and filtering through the noise online, so you don’t have to.
Tips for How to Stop Breastfeeding a Baby or Toddler (or Beyond)
The first supplemental feed, from a bottle, or of solid food, is the beginning of weaning. The weaning does not need to be all or nothing and it’s a personal journey for every woman.
There’s no right or wrong number in terms of how long you “should” be breastfeeding your baby or toddler (or older child) and is a personal decision every mother must make for themselves.
Every situation is so different but ideally speaking it’s best to wean your baby or toddler (or beyond) from the boob gradually not only to prevent engorgement, but also to cut back on the tears.
Once you decide you’re ready to stop breastfeeding your baby or toddler, be sure to emotionally prepare while you implement these practical tips.
One thing that I didn’t mention in the video is possible mood-related symptoms that can occur after you stop breastfeeding. This is called post-weaning depression so be sure to consult with your doctor if you suspect you’re experiencing this.

I have been breastfeeding for over 8 years.
Been pregnant 3 times
(3 pairs of female twins)
Sofia and Jojo
7 years 10 months
Anna and Elsa
4 years 4 months
Maddy and Olife
1 year 1 month
My husband and I had agreed that we would let everything take its course.
We rely on breastfeeding as a natural birth control method.
It has been very fruitful and effective for our family.
2nd and 3rd pregnancy of last grade
I’m pregnant and still haven’t had my postpartum period come back.
Today, our current twins are breastfed all the time, but I haven’t gotten my period back after giving birth.
And hopefully it will be a way to increase our baby birth gap for some time to come.
