Instead of avoiding screens, teach your kids how to have a healthy relationship with them! Focus on building a foundation of open communication, digital safety & healthy screen habits.
And the earlier we start teaching these things, the better!
To help you get started, here are 4 practical ways to teach your kids about healthy digital habits!
I know it’s tempting to allow your kids 24/7 access to screens, but this approach can easily backfire with tantrums, defiance, and disconnection after screens.
Remember: Screens should come *after* all priorities are done (e.g., homework, chores, tasks).
Creating a simple, yet consistent, routine around screens teaches self-discipline.
Use a simple “When/Then” statement to help create structure around screens.
For example: “When you finish your homework, then you can watch an episode of TV or use your phone.”
Decide on screen-free zones (e.g., kitchen table, bedrooms, etc) & screen-free times.
Create this plan with your child so they feel included in this process.
You can use parental controls as a way to reinforce the family rules but don’t set parental controls without *first* having this conversation with your kids.
Whenever possible, opt to expose your child to quality screen time that encourages them to engage with others, problem solve, be creative, and/or exercise or practice self care.

In general, media can be a great learning tool for kids if they understand what they’re viewing. Watch TV shows and movies together, and use scenes to help them process what they viewed.
